Tech Talk: Reply vs Reply All

775_4138276_webQUICK TIP
When to use REPLY vs REPLY ALL

Have you ever been stuck in an email chain that was 20 messages long, and you weren’t even part of the conversation?  If so, then you will appreciate the importance of this Tech Talk: Quick Tip.

Use these points as a guide to help you decide if you should send a message using REPLY or REPLY ALL.

  • Select REPLY to send a message back to the person who sent you the message. This is similar to a one-on-one conversation.
  • Select REPLY ALL to send a message back to every person on the recipient list (or everyone who received the message.) This is similar to a conference call. Anyone who dials into the call, whether 2 or 100 will hear the same message.

Lessons Learned

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Phil 4:19

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Exodus 14:14

lesson-learned-graphicHave you ever had God reiterate the same message in your life, over, and over, and over again?

Well every year, all year long, there are two messages that God continues to deliver to me loud and clear. The first is “I got your back. I will take care of it. Don’t worry about it.” The second is, “Don’t trip. I’ll fight your battles. You just chill.” My translation. God probably doesn’t speak slang.

Here I am again, realizing that God is showing himself to me once again. After having a very bad customer service experience, I wrote a number of emails to the company about my ordeal. It was actually the same email delivered to multiple people. Anyway, as a result, the company decided to return to me the full amount of my $800 deposit (which they didn’t have to do).

About an hour after I received the good news, I had what Oprah calls an “Ah Ha” moment. I realized that the amount they were refunding ($800) was just $55 short of the bill I’d incurred with a plumber due to a leaky sewage pipe in the basement (I know right!) the week before ($855).

So look at God! An unavoidable $855 plumbing bill is covered by a refund received because of someone’s bad manners. Ain’t God good! Won’t he do it!

So what’s the lesson?

1) God’s [ALWAYS] got your back. He will [ALWAYS] take care of it. Don’t [EVER] worry about it.
2) Don’t trip. God will fight your battles. Just be still.

Livin’ It!

“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.”
Philippians 1:27

livin-it-graphicOne day I called a company to cancel a policy I’d obtained from them less than a month before. When the customer service representative inquired why I was cancelling, I explained that I discovered I already had the same coverage with a different company. Although I answered his question honestly and directly, that wasn’t a satisfactory for him. He began to yell, yes yell, at me that I wasn’t answering his questions and I wasn’t listening to him. But throughout the call, as he spoke over me, I maintained a calm, polite and respectful voice and tone although I was heated!

Eventually, I hung up on the man because he just wasn’t yielding. After waiting a few minutes, I called back hoping to get a different agent. No such luck. Once again, the same man answered the phone pleasantly, I identified myself and the purpose of my call, and he asked, “Is this the same person I was just on the line with?” I answered him, “Yes. I would still like to cancel my policy.” Again, he went on a rant, yelling, and almost cursing insisting that he wasn’t going to cancel my policy, and that I wasn’t listening to him. But still, I remained calm and polite and respectful toward him. At this point I was HOT!

In the midst of his rage, he said the only way the policy could be cancelled is through non-payment. Eureka! That was the answer to the question. When I heard that, I thought, “I’ll just call the bank tomorrow and place a stop payment on the account.” After that there was no reason for me to stay on the phone with him. I said, “Thank you for that information. Enjoy the rest of your evening,” and I hung up again.

Through all of the yelling, and the emotions running high, I didn’t take the bait. I was determined that no matter what he threw at me, I was going to “conduct myself in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Living the Word, is a lot harder than quoting it.

The New Jim Crow

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
Book Author Michelle Alexander

home_book_cvrI first came to Washington, DC in 1996 to work as the Senior Field Organizer for the Children’s Defense Fund’s Black Community Crusade for Children. That same year I was invited to a meeting at the White House with then President Bill Clinton. When I told my mom, she asked me what I planned on saying to the President. I told her that I did not know but it would begin with these words, “With all due respect, Mr. President.”

I was told by my bosses at the Children’s Defense Fund that the meeting should be more than a photo opportunity for the President and that I should have a question ready for him. I decided that the question I would raise would be about the “3 Strikes and You’re Out” laws that had popped up in many states in an attempt to be “tough” on crime. Those policies and others which were a part of our nation’s failed war on crime led to the disproportionate number of young African American males being locked up.

Our families, communities, churches and society have been robbed of millions of African American men in the process, but there is a prophet in our land and her name is Michelle Alexander.

I decided to read “The New Jim Crow” because I wanted my faith to matter. Someone called the New Jim Crow “the bible of a social movement.” It is a book not only to be read, but to be studied, not only to be studied, but to be lived. In this regard, I agree. It is the bible of a social movement and its gospel deserves to be spread.

Discover Shiloh Mobile: Home

picShilohMobile.org is the new mobile site of Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington. This site is packed full of information and features for you to explore. So much so, that we’ve decided to give you a guided tour by way of our “Tech Talk” blog posts.

This week we’ll take a look at the HOME page of the Shiloh Mobile site.

The HOME page is where every website begins. It’s the introduction of sorts to what viewers can expect from the site. The most prominent feature of the Shiloh Mobile home page is the rotating banner. It currently contains graphics with scriptures, event reminders, and of course our Shiloh Mobile DC app announcement (shameless plug). This content will change on occasion so make sure you don’t rush by it too fast. Just a side note, the banner will not take the place of, or function in the same manner as Shiloh’s Dashboard (available under the “Events” tab on shilohmobile.org). The Dashboard is totally different.

Immediately under the rotating banner is the “Verse of the Day”. This section displays a new bible verse every day. After all, we want to “Spread the Word” every chance we get. Feel free to come back every day to see the new scripture.

As you scroll further down the page you’ll see our “New App for Shiloh” intro. If you’ve read our previous Tech Talk posts, this text will seem familiar to you. We thought it was so appropriate that we’d begin our site with it too. This text will eventually change, because the app won’t be new forever.

The final feature on the Shiloh Mobile homepage is a list of ALL the ways you can “Stay Connected” with Shiloh online! Whew! That’s a long list. What does this mean for you? Well, if you’re not on Twitter, then you can follow us on Facebook. If you’re not on Google+, then you can follow us on Instagram. And if you’re not on any social networking sites, then you can always find us on shilohbaptist.org, shilohmobile.org, or download our Shiloh Mobile DC app from Google Play or The App Store (last shameless plug).

That’s all for now. Have fun discovering SHILOH MOBILE!

Mary’s “Did You Know?”: Dick Gregory

marys-photoRICHARD CLAXTON GREGORY, was born October 12, 1932 in St. Louis, MO. We know him as DICK GREGORY, the comedian, activist, and now he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dick Gregory has at last been recognized for his sacrifices, hunger strikes, activism, and his comedic talents. He has used his celebrity status to advance social causes in which he so strongly believes. He’s always a willing listener, is generous in sharing his knowledge, and is an overall a great guy.

I have met Mr. Gregory on several occasions, and he’s always been open and friendly. He even shared some of his vegetarian lunch with me on a flight from Chicago once.

The first Black comedian to earn more than $1 million a year, in the early 1970’s Dick Gregory left that lucrative career to focus his efforts on such social justice issues as race relations, world hunger, drug abuse, health care, and more. He uniquely used his comedic background to convey his messages on the issues for which he continues to fight today.
